Acupuncture is Used to Treat Many Diseases
Acupuncture became famous in the West for pain relief after 1971 when New York TImes reporter James Reston had his appendix removed using acupuncture analgesia. Doctors have used acupuncture, instead of anesthetics, to perform a variety of surgeries. It is much safer alternative to chemical anesthesia for suitable surgeries and substantially reduces recovery time.
However, acupuncture, which can effect every physiological system in the body, can treat many other things beyond pain related problems. According to the World Health Organization, the National Institutes for Health, and clinical experience, Acupuncture is useful in the treatment of:
Chronic and Acute Pain - Injuries, headaches, neck and back pain, tendonitis, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia
Neurological Disorders - Post-stroke recovery, Bell's Palsy & Trigeminal Neuralgia, movement disorders
Upper Respiratory Disorders - Asthma, allergies, bronchitis, sinusitis, sore throat, laryngitis, colds and flu.
Digestive Disorders - Irritable bowel, colitis, constipation, diarrhea, gastritis, heartburn, food allergies, ulcers
Urinary and Reproductive Disorders - Cystitis, menstrual cramps, irregular or heavy periods, infertility, menopausal symptoms.
Immune Function - Recurrent infections, supportive treatment for cancer and AIDS patients.
Addictions - Addictions to nicotine, alcohol and drugs.
Eye and Ear Disorders - Tinnitus, Meniere's disease.
Depression, Anxiety & Insomnia
Acupuncture is successfully used for even more conditions than this extensive list based on modern clinical trials that had been performed up to the time the list was compiled. For example, a new study just reported acupuncture outperformed penicillin for conjunctivitis. We are discovering that the energetic field acupuncture accesses impacts all aspects of our health from our deep psychological patterns to the hard science of our biochemistry and perhaps our genes. It can effectively treat a long list of disorders, frequently with greater efficacy than the industrial medical alternatives of drugs or surgery.

Qi & Energy Balanced by Needle, Magnets, Lasers and More
The Acupuncture field has complex rules of behavior. The Chinese have a word "qi", often translated as "energy". At least 28 different kinds of qi are discussed in the ancient classics. Some types of qi (chi) flow in specific complex pathways called acupuncture channels. Qi is not exactly energy, but more like patterned dynamic information and power. Altering qi alters the communication in the body at all levels. The Acupuncture field can be balanced by needles, finger pressure, lasers, or magnets at precise points along these pathways.
At the Live Longer Live Stronger Center (East West Healing Arts Center) we often use needleless methods to stimulate acupuncture points. These include gold and silver pellets and magnets oriented correctly at the best acupuncture points as determined by experience and modern biofeedback testing. Magnets are often taped over the acupuncture point as an alternative to needle stimulation. These can continue to stimulate the acupuncture points over a longer period of time while you carry on activities of daily living.
Each point has a unique effect on the body or mind. Appointments last about an hour. We use needles to stimulate carefully tested and chosen acupuncture points in about 20% of visits. Generally, the fine needles and points chosen make the procedure painless, though a temporary dull aching sensation may occur. The number of acupuncture points used ranges from 1 to as many as 16 depending upon the condition being treated. Three to six being typical. Fear of Needles Cured & Needleless Options
Acupuncture points, or acupoints, can be stimulated be a wide variety of methods in addition to needles. Classically, simple pressure or moxibustion, using heat from the burning mugwort herb, were widely used. In modern clinics lasers, magnets and small vaccaria seeds are also alternatives.
Some people avoid acupuncture based on the experience of getting hypodermic shots as children. Acupuncture needles are far finer than hypodermic needles and are designed to move tissue out of the way rather than cut through tissues as the fat and sharp hypodermic does. Acupuncture is typically painless at the great majority of acupuncture point locations.
A woman of twenty-five was deathly afraid of needles, yet she bravely came in for her first acupuncture treatment. We used acupressure to free her of her needle phobia. After twenty minutes she was then able to insert a needle herself into a safe location I had selected. (I can attest to the fact that self-needling requires more courage than letting someone else doing it.) People often enter a deep sleep while receiving acupuncture. They feel very relaxed afterwards, so don't plan highly stressful events immediately after your treatment (unless the treatment is for improving the way you handle stress).
Choosing Among Thousands of Acupuncture Points
We have helped develop an effective method of "asking" the body exactly which points the body needs for a given condition. This is a part of our use of modern biofeedback testing. Each point works to bring an energetic balance and harmony that aligns the body to correct a specific problem. Thus acupuncture point selection is a critical issue. We have developed a new and very accurate way to predict the best points for a given problem. Food desensitization and treatment of Emotional, Interpersonal, Spirit and Chakra disturbances, functional enzyme improvement and genetic expression modification are among the several special types of acupuncture we have pioneered.
This method works well for acute problems of all kinds, i.e., physical injuries and emotional trauma, flu and colds, asthma, female problems, digestive issues, and phobias. When health problems come up give us a call immediately so we can help you resolve it more rapidly.
By the same token, we use acupuncture successfully, often in combination with herbs, for chronic problems ranging from diabetes, endometriosis to Parkinson's disease. Acupuncture and moxibustion (warming skin at acupuncture points with certain smoldering herbs) have been shown in studies to greatly increase immunity (herbs such as astragalus and artemesia vulgaris used in moxibustion also perform this function) and have healing effects that can be synergistic with acupuncture.
Acupuncture often results in immediate symptom improvement, not by suppressing symptoms but by balancing and normalizing the body's healing functions. For example, bad sore throats are usually more than 50% improved in about 2 minutes. Often this trend continues and the symptom, along with raw feeling, redness and swelling, are gone within a half hour. For chronic problems treatments are usually conducted in courses of treatments to fully resolve the original problem.
